The perennial charm of Dorchester can be found in its inspirational heritage. Dorchester is the birth place of author Thomas Hardy and was the setting for some of his fictional works. Later in life he designed his townhouse Max Gate in 1885 where he wrote several of his most famous novels. For Hardy enthusiasts, or those with a literary leaning, Dorchester is the mecca for your pilgrimage. Also, of note in the centre of Dorchester are the Borough Gardens, designed in 1896 by the landscape architect William Goldring of Kew Gardens. This beautiful, leafy space is the arena for many festivals and events in the area. It’s no surprise with this creative history that Dorchester has an inspiring Spring festival schedule.
