The Best Villages to Retire to in Dorset

If you’re thinking of retiring in 2019 or the near future, you might be considering relocating to somewhere with more scenic surroundings. Dorset is a regular contender on various ‘best places to live in the UK’ lists, and it’s easy to see why. Every town and village in Dorset are packed with character and things to do, not to mention the abundance of sunshine and green spaces. One of the things that many people who relocate to Dorset comment on is the higher quality of life here. And if you’re looking for a reliable company to move you to Dorset, Woods Removals has the right service for you.

Woods Removals Favourite Retirement Villages in Dorset –

Ashmore – this small village is a bit under the radar, so don’t tell anyone we gave you directions. Ashmore is known for its circular pond or ‘mere’, which is the town’s original name Ashmere. The village has all the trappings of a quaint Dorset village – thatched roofs, a population under two hundred and one public house.

Charminster – with just under three thousand people resident here, we’re moving up the population scale slightly. However, you’ll find similar thatched roofs and period homes throughout. Charminster is just a short distance from Dorchester so that you can have the idyllic village life with the advantages of a larger settlement nearby.

Milton Abbas – and just as we were heading for a more social village scenario, the next instalment on our list has a population of under eight hundred people. This village has what could be described as cottages from a fairy-tale, all steeped in the village’s history as having blacksmiths and other traders as occupants.

Puddletown – apart from its slightly amusing sounding name, this village has a fascinating history of literary significance. In the classic novel Far from the Maddening Crowd, the village of Weatherbury was based on Puddletown. This beautiful village is full of history, unique architecture and the same period housing with thatched roofs you’d expect from a Dorset village.

Moving Tips to Consider Before You Relocate –

Whether you’re moving from a five-bed house in Sherbourne or a two-bed apartment in Dorchester, you need to start planning now. Work out your moving date and calculate how much time you need to complete all your tasks. Then, list everything you need to do at that time and try to work out which ones are more important. From there, you can split each action point into smaller, more manageable tasks.

Ideally, you should aim to get at least two or three smaller tasks done per week. If possible, give yourself at least three or four months between now and the date of your relocation. It’s vital that you do as much homework on the area you’re moving to as possible. That means you should see where the local GP and hospital are located, especially if someone in your family has a medical condition.

If you have a young family, you’ll need to start contacting schools to try and get placements. You should also see what sort of amenities is in the local vicinity, which will include supermarkets, entertainment and places to eat out. It’s also advisable to visit your new area a few times in advance of your big move.

When you book with a reliable removals company like Woods Removals, we’ll take care of all your packing needs. That includes the packing materials, and we can assist with inventory of your possessions. We always recommend downloading a home inventory app. They’re usually free or cheap, and you can create a comprehensive list of all your belongings. You then save them with a photo of each item and what room they belong to.

Clear out all clutter and use plastic containers and solid boxes to pack. Don’t take your bad habits with you to your new home. If you use the items, organise and pack them away, so they’re easy to identify and locate. If you rarely or never use them – sell or donate the items.
